Cape Towns Beaches and Sundowners
A selection of sand, Sundowners and Seafood - the things that make Cape Town summers worthwhile with its Mediterranean style and African sun.
In general, the Atlantic beaches tend to be more fashionable i.e. Clifton, Camps Bay, Llandudno and Hout Bay but the water is cold and chilly. Those beaches on the Indian side tend to be warmer, i.e. Muizenberg, Fish Hoek and Boulders - Simons Town.
The general rule is to look for the most expensive and trendy areas since they are located where the least wind is experienced and so have the best climate.
To stay safe at the beach, always swim where there is a lifeguard on patrol, never swim where there are signs not to, or when a red flag is flying. Always obey the safety signs, make sure there are other people around because you never know when help might be needed and if in doubt, ask a lifeguard for advice.
The best beaches:
CLIFTON
If you are hoping to surround yourself with perfect bodies, then head for one of the four beaches in Clifton. Four beautiful beaches that are protected from the wind but the water is chilly.
CAMPS BAY
Cape Towns answer to Miami. Camps Bay is fringed by palm trees and has a promenade filled with great restaurants and fashionable bars. This is a firm favourite with locals and visitors alike. It is family friendly...but the water is chilly.
BOULDERS
Boulders is the home to the colony of Jackass African Penguins. A quiet beach surrounded by magnificent boulders. The penguins almost take over the beach and the entrance fee guarantees you the pleasure of watching them and swimming in the warm waters. Go early for breakfast.
LLANDUDNO
Llandudno is a small exclusive seaside village clinging to steep slopes above a sheltered beach known for its laid back atmosphere. The beach is the ideal spot for watching the sun set over the Atlantic Ocean.
HOUT BAY
Hout Bay beach is a picturesque and popular spot for beachgoers. Water sports enthusiasts have plenty to keep them happy, ranging from scuba diving to surfing and sea-kayaking. It is a child friendly beach.
NOORDHOEK AND KOMMETJIE
Noordhoek is known for its almost deserted 3.7 mile beach ideal for horse riding, its also a popular surf spot. Kommetjie is the focal point for surfing on the Cape.
MUIZENBERG AND FISH HOEK
These beaches offer the best of both worlds, they are shallow and relatively warm for children. They are both popular surfing spots too.
