The outlook remains sunny.
Why suffer the British winter when the sun's shining in South Africa? For many people heading to the sunshine when the leaves fall from the trees is the signal. It's time to swap seasons and travel south. Athough the rand has strengthened, it's still no match for sterling and even so the jet-lag free flight is worth paying an extra 25 pence in the pound. Start in glorious Cape Town, a city that can't be matched.
Cape Town is at its finest as Europe battles with winter and is well prepared to entertain tourists with its culture of generosity. The city has wonderful restaurants, shopping and wine estates as well as the sparkling sea, its beaches and the Cape Peninsula's most prominent feature, Table Mountain. See all this and more and you still won't have even hit a golf ball on some of the Capes most celebrated golf courses.
Travel to the Winelands and picturesque Franschhoek, sample fine wines and dine in any one of the many gourmet restaurants and stay overnight. From here move onto Hermanus, the self-styled centre of the whale-watching universe.
Then trek the spectacular Garden Route to Knysna and Plettenberg Bay; the playground of the South African wealthy. Body-surf, watch dolphins, hike, cycle, bungee jump, river raft or play polo.
Then on to Kwazulu Natal with its stunning scenery and the historic Zulu battlefields of Rorke's Drift and Isandlwana. Finally, there is Johannesburg and Soweto, the world famous Kruger National Park and those private game reserves. See Africa's spectacular and breathtaking wildlife with the 'big five' on a game drive.
Now that's a journey to take away the winter blues.......................not bad for the bottom of the world.
